My First Summer at Camp

Monday, September 4th, 2017

I was very excited and nervous for my first day of summer camp at Camp Starlight. I did not now what to expect when coming to camp and was nervous about what would happen. When I came to camp and came off the bus I exploded with happiness, camp seemed so cool and fun.

Campus is so pretty with the giant lake and there are so many great snacks to eat. I quickly made a lot of friends and had so much fun with the dance specialists. The dance staff is so nice and fun to dance with, dance is my favorite activity at camp. When I grow up I want to be a counselor and a dance specialist at Camp Starlight.

I made so many memories at my first summer but my favorite memory of the summer was making it to the finals for MTV night, my counselors really pushed me to work hard and it payed off.

I also learned a lot of fun things, like how to waterski for the first time. Every day is fun and full of adventure. I love all my new friends at camp and even though I was nervous at first, Camp Starlight easily became my summer home. I love how much fun I get to have every day at Camp Starlight and can’t wait for next summer already.

Help Campers Express Creativity Through Dance

Thursday, July 20th, 2017

Written by Hana M.

Everyday when I walk into the dance studio I look at the wall of mirrors and wonder what talent I will see today, marvelling at what new dance moves will be performed and what new techniques will be mastered. The dance studio brings in new campers everyday of all different skill levels and being able to watch the creativity and passion flow from these campers is why I believe I have the best job on campus as the Dance Specialist. Coming into the studio with a crazy amount of energy and smiles, the campers always come ready to learn a new move or dance routine. I feed off their energy and it drives me to have the most fun possible with them, it makes me eager to teach and help them master new skills of dance. When the campers pick up on something they have never worked on before and master it with ease it is so exciting to watch. On the other hand, when campers with lower confidence in their dancing abilities pick up on the dance I become overjoyed to see their progress and see how they realize they can dance. One of my favorite parts of my job is to see campers build their confidence as camp goes on, increasing the difficulty of the dance moves or pace of the routine. When I see campers overcome these struggles and present a final dance it gives me the most rewarding feeling as a counselor. The final dance, whether it’s presented to the camp, at competition or just in the studio, always looks so effortlessly done, but I know all the hard work that is put in to make it look effortless and that is an honor to me. Helping these campers express themselves through dance and song and see them accomplish so many goals is why I know I have the best job at Camp Starlight.

Camp Starlight Dance Competition

Tuesday, August 4th, 2015

On Wednesday, the Camp Starlight Dance Team competed at the Tyler Hill’s Dance Competition. Starlight brought home the most awards out of the 16 camps that competed. All three dances that entered the competition were awarded trophies! Junior camp came in 3rd out of 17 entries with an entertaining musical theater number titled “The New Girl in Town.”  An all-star team of dancers placed 2nd in the middle camp division with “Reveille,” a hip hop routine. And the Upper Camp impressed judges with its contemporary piece, “Aqueous,” placing 3rd in its division. We are so proud of all three dance teams and congratulate them on representing Starlight with such amazing performances.

A lot is made of Wayne County Sports here at Camp Starlight. Performance arts are becoming increasingly more popular. The dance program is a particular favorite among campers of all ages. With staff proficient in contemporary, jazz, ballet, and hip-hop, campers are able to experiment grow in their love of dance. We sat down with new Dance Head Loren Foster and spoke with her about her extensive dance background as well as her goals for the Starlight Dance Program this summer.

Loren has taught dance for 14 years, holds a BFA in dance from Florida State University, and is a Certified Dance Teacher for K-12. She was also a member of FSU’s prestigious Golden Girls dance team. During the winter, she teaches ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, and modern in South Florida. She also works as an Arts Integration Specialist at the Palm Beach County School District and dances for the professional company REACH. Currently, she is busy preparing for the Starlight Dance Competition where a number of camps from Wayne County will vie for the championship in July.

Loren is excited to be working on fun choreography that highlights the campers’ natural talents and showcases the dance styles at which they are best. Loren is also a proponent of empowering campers in order to help them grow in an activity area they love, such as dance. She says working at camp makes her feel young and loves that she is able to “bring out their creativity and fun when they add their input and take leadership roles in dance.

An Entertaining and Successful Dance Competition

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

A big day for virtually all of girls camp at Camp Starlight is always the Camp Starlight dance competition.  This year, we hosted twelve camps at our annual competition.  Literally hundreds of campers from surrounding Wayne County camps brought their dance teams, soloist, duos, and trios for a morning of entertaining friendly yet competitive competition.  After watching everyone compete, one thing is for sure: There are some VERY talented dancers in Wayne County.  The numbers ranged from cheer to lyrical, and many of the costumes and music choices were almost as creative as the dance moves.   The morning was very successful and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.  Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and congratulations to everyone for great performances!
