While You’re Waiting until June…

So, the summer of 2014 is still a L-O-N-G 8 months away. But here are a few things to keep you warm during the colder months of the year…

1.)    Opening Day. Is there any better feeling than that moment the bus pulls up to camp, you step off and are immediately tackled by a herd of camp friends who have waited all year to see you?

2.)    Campfires. Every camp has its own version. In fact, your camp’s campfire is a big part of what makes it your camp. You’re sure of two things: A) Your camp’s campfire is the best B) S’mores taste best when eaten at your camp’s campfire.

3.)  Sing-alongs. It’s amazing how much singing silly songs arm-in-arm with your camp friends during the summer makes you feel. Admit it. You find yourself singing to yourself throughout the winter. Your school friends catch you. You want to explain. But they’ll never get it. “It’s a camp thing,” you say. You immediately send a Vine to all of your camp friends of you singing – and doing motions to –your favorite camp songs.

4.)    Arts & Crafts. Seriously, you can tie-dye at home too…really.

5.)    The official camp video, yearbook or seasonal newsletter. It should be showing up in your mailbox anytime now. Host a party. Reminisce about this past summer. Know that next summer will be here before you know it. Set goals now. Next summer will be epic.

6.)    Camp Shows. Thespians and camp go hand-in-hand. It’s no coincidence that a lot the biggest names in Hollywood are summer camp alumni. Summer camp is a breeding ground for creativity and the perfect environment for exploring your creative side.  Admit it. You’re still humming the songs from your camp shows this past summer.

7.)    Boats. Camp has lots of boats. Ski boats, sailboats, kayaks, canoes…Whichever is your choice, one fact: some of the best moments of the summer happen on the water.

8.)    Trips. Are the movies at home ever as good as it is when you’re enjoying it with your camp friends? What about roller coasters? Didn’t think so.

9.)    Camp food. Admit it. You live for S Day Breakfasts.

10.)  Bunkmates. When you come home with something exciting to share during the winter, who do you share it with?

Camp Souvenirs

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

It happens while you’re unpacking.  You happen on an oddity or two—or ten—in your child’s bag or maybe shorts pockets.  Crazy little circular chains of rubber bands (dozens of them!) seem to be tucked into every crevice of clothing your child could find; a water bottle filled with what appears to be sand and lake water or a pocket full of leaves.  These are but a few of the little treasures that made their way home with your camper.  You ponder over your child’s spoils from camp for a few minutes and try to figure out what it’s about.  Then you finally decide to ask about ‘a Ziploc baggie full of sand?’

‘From the waterfront!’ Your child proudly declares.  ‘I wanted something to remember the fun I had there this summer.’  You sit the bag (that you were considering throwing out a few seconds before your child walked into the room) down on the nightstand and make a mental note to pick up a container that will do it a little bit more justice than a Ziploc baggie.

‘And what about what about those rubber band things?’

‘Bracelets’.

‘Ahhhh…Of course.’

The souvenirs that find their way home from Camp Starlight are always one of your favorite parts of unpacking.  It’s become a game for you, trying to guess the chain of events that led to you finding that random piece of burnt rope alongside your child’s socks and putting it together with the years prior to this summer that he and his camp friends spent plotting their rope burn strategy.

‘Rope burn?’

‘We won!’

‘Yes!’ You guessed one.  You’re starting to get good at this.  What you begin to realize is that the random discoveries you’ve been fishing out of your child’s luggage like an archeologist at a dig site aren’t random at all.  They’re memories.  More importantly, they’re the summer’s best memories in the form of rubber bands, lake-water filled water bottles, sand filled Ziploc baggies, and, yes, even burnt pieces of rope.  The candles and ceramic animals are obvious.  You like them, too.  But it’s these special little surprise finds that tell the more complex story of your child’s summer–the reason you’ve come to like, actually anticipate, unpacking after your child returns home from camp.  You’re not exactly sure what you’re going to find or what it will mean, but you can’t wait to fi

Missing Camp

A special guest blog submitted by one of our campers…

It has already been more than a month since our amazing summer of 2013 at Camp Starlight came to an end. Through Instagram and Facebook, we have been frequently refreshing to see what camp pictures and posts have been uploaded. Texting and emailing our best friends, everyone has been in touch. School and work has started for everyone at this point, and when you first walked into your classroom, thoughts and flashbacks of getting up on the waterskis for the first time or swishing the 3-pointer makes you sad that we have to wait ten more months.

But there are new features on @campstarlight_official on Instagram and other stuff on Facebook, be sure to check back regularly for contests, shoutouts, and more. Comment and post on all of our pictures. Tag us on camp posts for a shoutout chance.

Home (Parentheses)

Monday, August 12th, 2013

Parents: By now your pantries are empty, your laundry rooms are full, and your television remote controls are affixed to your children’s hands.  The campers are home, and they’re riding a camp high.  They have a lot to tell you.  Get ready to hear a lot of stories about camp (over and over), be let in on a lot of inside jokes that you probably won’t understand because “it’s a camp thing” (laugh anyway), learn everything you could ever want to know and more about new friends (excellent excuse to look at camp photos again with your children), and listen to camp songs and cheers (they’ll likely want to teach them to you too).  Sometime around mid-September, you’ll probably start wagering with your spouse about whether your children will stop talking about this summer before next summer starts (not likely).

You’ll try to start conversations about things other than camp (you’re pretty sure you’ve seen an episode or two of Pretty Little Liars),but inevitably the conversation will come back to camp. (Remember the episode when Spencer realized that she’d been to summer camp with Hannah’s stepsister?  And speaking of camp…) But just when you’re starting to feel camped out, something will happen this fall that will make you remember why you love hearing about camp.  Registration for next summer will open.   You’ll remember that this is the point every year when still hearing about this summer even though it’s time to start thinking about next summer transforms into music to your ears, and the lyrics are your children’s way of telling you that they love camp (even though by that time they’ve said they love camp about a million times).  You’ll think about everything they’ve shared with you about camp, try (and fail) to count how many times they’ve used the word “camp” since they’ve returned home, and maybe even admire some of their arts & craft handiwork as you pat yourself on the back for deciding to give your children the gift of summer camp (then you’ll check the camp website for the Visiting Day 2014 date).

End of Summer

Monday, August 5th, 2013

It’s hard to believe another summer has nearly come and gone at Camp Starlight, but here we are.  In just a few weeks, the camp season of 2013 will be a memory and school buses will once again be a regular sight around many neighborhoods.  There is always a feeling around camp at the end of the summer that someone pushed a fast-forward button.  Right about now, campers and staff begin reflecting on where the time has gone.  But something happens in that reflection; they remember EVERYTHING they did over the summer.

Moments at camp happen so fast.  The days are packed full of adventure.  Whencampers and staff begin to inventory their summer memories, they’re often in awe of the amount of things they achieved in such a short period of time.  In retrospect, the summer seems endless.  There were the big adventures; trips, all camp events, campfires, shows, performances, leagues, Olympics.  There were the daily activities; swimming, playing sports, arts and crafts, circus, eco science, theater, nature, fishing, etc.  Those are the activities that seem to make the summer go on forever.  Then there were the moments and events that stick out as really special; being with friends, creating that special craft project, riding a zipline for the first time, hitting a bullseye in archery, making a foul shot in basketball, getting up on waterskis.  Those are the memories that freeze time.  They’re the ones that make the summer of 2013, “Summer 2013” in hearts and memories.  Those are the moments behind teary goodbyes, repeated camp stories, and the countdown for next year.  Memories are a great dessert after a filling summer, and like every great dessert, everyone wants more.

Lower Deb Girls Bunk 18

Friday, July 26th, 2013

A very special week at Camp Starlight each summer is Challenge Week, during which bunks compete for prize “money” that they later use to purchase prizes at an auction.  This year, Lower Debs bunk 18 won an interview and blog feature, so we recently sat down with them and chatted over milkshakes.

Collectively, almost all the girls have been together as a bunk for four years now, although they’ve had a few additions over the years.  They have a bunk mascot, Fanny Frog, and a bunk song called “Chugga”  that they made up their Upper Junior summer (and happily performed) and  to which they’ve added parts over time as new people have joined the bunk.  They also performed their Lower Deb elephant cheer.  They’re very proud of being Lower Debs elephants.  In fact, several of them mentioned that their Lower Deb summer has been their favorite so far.  In particular, they love being part of Upper Camp and having more responsibilities.

When it comes to memorable moments of this summer, Miss Starlight was a hit because their “contestant” came in 3rd.   But they were quick to point out that the summer is not over, though, and some of the best stuff is still to come–like their Hershey Park trip next week.  It’s their first overnight trip, so there is even more collective anticipation than there has been in the past (and also the reason they’re sure it’s going to be their best trip so far).  They’re also excited for their favorite part of camp: Olympics.  All nine of the girls unanimously agreed that the Olympic Break is always one of their best memories of the summer.

When asked to name their favorite thing about camp, their answers were as varied as they are, but none of them could pick just one:

Jessie V.—being with friends and lacrosse

Chessy G.—cooking, waterskiing, and lacrosse

Shelby P.—dance, cooking, and lacrosse

Lauren B.—campfires, water activities, and gymnastics

Marni K.—tubing and lacrosse

Spencer J.—cooking, dance, and softball

Jamie C.—lacrosse, softball, and cooking

Bailee P.—spending time with friends, arts & crafts, and tennis

Sam W.—arts & crafts and friends

Overall, it was a fun interview session.  The girls were very enthusiastic, energetic, and positive.  Thank you, ladies, and have a great rest of the summer!

Counting the Days…

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

As the days get brighter and temperatures get warmer, the countdown to the summer of 2013 is getting closer! We know everyone is excited to return to the 18461.  It seems like everything reminds us of Starlight!

The month leading up to camp can seem like the longest, but all throughout the year we try to keep the energy of camp amongst our camp family. Our campers and staff are constantly writing to us about things in their everyday lives that remind them of Starlight.  We’ve seen photos of wacky mac at the grocery store, fellow Starlighters hearing “Can’t Smile Without” you on the radio, or and even spotted fellow camp people on television! It seems as if the Starlight community keeps expanding and we can’t go anywhere without hearing or seeing something that brings flashbacks of the wonderful place we call our summer home.

One of the best things about Starlight is the pride in which our campers and staff take from being a part of Starlight. They wear their Starlight T-shirts with honor to class, create everlasting friendships after camp with their fellow camp siblings, and even our staff bring their great friends to share the “experience of a lifetime” as it has been quoted in the past. These are the simple things that make us remember why Starlight is such a special place to be.

As the years go by and we look forward to each and every summer, it’s important to remember the memories we’ve had but to also be excited for the future! Less than 55 days until we all are reunited again! So, next time you’re in the car, walking down the street, or simply watching TV… keep you eyes and ears open because you might see something that brings back the nostalgia of camp!

We love to bring back the memories of the previous summers throughout our social media platforms. We hope you follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for updates all throughout the year.

The First Day I Got to Starlight

Thursday, March 14th, 2013
The first day I got to Starlight it looked like the best place ever!!  I was so right!!  Camp Starlight means the world to me, there is nothing better then spending the whole summer with friends you love.  All day you play and laugh and smile with your friends.  To me, my camp friends aren’t  just friends they are sisters.  I wish I could spend every second of my life at Starlight laughing and playing and doing all different things with my friends.  At Starlight you get to be who you want to be.  I have a really special bond with all my friends, counselors and staff, and when the summer ends you don’t want to leave CAMP STARLIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

Going to Camp with Your Siblings

Sunday, March 10th, 2013

They may fight like cats and dogs at home, but attending camp together is special for siblings.  Parents may be surprised to learn that at camp, they don’t accuse each of being the one to lose the television remote.  Instead, they wave and smile when they pass each other on campus.  They don’t fight about taking up each other’s space in the car either.  Instead, they make special meeting places to talk about camp—everything they’ve done, new things they’ve tried, new friends they’ve made, and how their sports teams are doing how they got a bullsyeye in archery or are going to be singing a song in the show.  Siblings don’t taunt each other when they do something silly at camp.  They cheer for them.  And, parents, you may be surprised to learn that siblings don’t pretend that each other has an infectious disease that prevents them from ever touching at camp.  They readily hug.

As you can see, summer camp may as well be Hogwarts for its ability to transform sibling rivalry into a special relationship.  Camp is a distinct set of memories they share apart from their parents.  Those camp experiences will always be just theirs, which creates a bond that helps them grow as brothers and sisters as well as individuals.  It’s an opportunity that many children who do not attend sleepaway camp don’t get to experience until adulthood.  By being able to share a special set of traditions and values, siblings are able to appreciate their relationships at a much earlier age.   The thrill of seeing each other experience camp firsts and pass camp milestones also helps them learn to appreciate each other as individuals.

And, let’s face it, we know that seeing your children smiling together in a camp photo after hitting the refresh button a thousand times each day makes it all worthwhile for you.  Those smiles are why you put them on the bus or plane each year.  They’re why you post the photos to your on Facebook pages and pass them around, accumulating likes.  You  love hearing them asking each if they remember a certain time at camp or singing the same songs and doing the same cheers.  In that respect, being able to send your children to summer camp together is special for you too.

Camp Starlight Senses

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

It has been over 3 years since I last stood in Starlight, PA, since I last heard the call to lineup, since I last smelled the Rec Hall, since I last tasted the chocolate chip pancakes, since I last felt the grass at kiddy campus, since I last saw a bim bam by the lake. And yet, my “camp senses” are as strong as ever.

Just a few days ago, I smelled something familiar. It was the kind of subtle smell that most would sniff without giving it a second thought. But I couldn’t; I recognized this smell. Without much thought, I knew what it was: banquet dinner, with those fancy mashed potatoes. Instantly, I was taken back to the last week of camp, when everyone on campus is squeezed into the mess hall dressed to the nines to enjoy a special meal to end the summer. I remembered banquets past and far past, what I was wearing, who I sat next to, who spoke and who had a star dedicated. I remembered the way I felt about the summer ending soon. And then, as quickly as it had come, the smell and the memory were gone.

In the same way that we never forget the taste of our grandmother’s matzoh balls, we never shake the “senses” that surround us each and every day at camp. These days, when I build a campfire, I am reminded of the way we built it at Rope Burn. When I hear a PA announcement, I am reminded of my days working the HC. After so many years at my second home, all it takes is the slightest nudge of the senses to take me back. In a way, I never left.
