It was an early start for most campers here at Camp Starlight this week. Morning began at 7 a.m. as many campers and staff members prepared for the Slope For Lope, an annual Camp Starlight tradition where campers run a distance of 1.8 miles, much of which is uphill. On the day of the event, campers and staff gathered at the beginning of the Camp Starlight road and the excitement built. David Miller started the race and led the way up the mile long road. Campers and staff ran side-by-side as they made their way through campus. The uphill run was a struggle for some, however everyone powered on, and finished the race. Some even beat their personal bests. After running the grueling 1.8 mile route, campers were given delicious, fresh cantaloupe and a Slope for Lope bracelet to commemorate the event. As always the talent and perseverance of our campers was easy to see, and we are so proud of them.

Thursday, August 6th, 2015Camp Starlight Dance Competition
Tuesday, August 4th, 2015On Wednesday, the Camp Starlight Dance Team competed at the Tyler Hill’s Dance Competition. Starlight brought home the most awards out of the 16 camps that competed. All three dances that entered the competition were awarded trophies! Junior camp came in 3rd out of 17 entries with an entertaining musical theater number titled “The New Girl in Town.” An all-star team of dancers placed 2nd in the middle camp division with “Reveille,” a hip hop routine. And the Upper Camp impressed judges with its contemporary piece, “Aqueous,” placing 3rd in its division. We are so proud of all three dance teams and congratulate them on representing Starlight with such amazing performances.

Today’s game against Camp Wayne was a sight to see, these ladies came they saw and the conquered from start to finish. From the jump Camp Starlight was the aggressor holding Camp Wayne to just two points at the half; ending the game with the final score of 68-14, leading the score for Starlight. Proving herself to be an offensive threat was Gari B finishing with a season high 19 points. Trailing not far behind finishing with also her season high of 15 is our workhorse and enforcer in the lane Morgan S who demonstrated her offensive capabilities by draining a 3 pointer late in the 4th. Samantha B and Jamie C both collected buckets finishing with 10 points apiece. On the defensive all of the ladies followed Jessica W lead and locked down every player Camp Wayne put them up against. I am very proud of these ladies, they are definitely developing into the team I know they can be.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2015Wayne County Boys Swim Meet
Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015Wayne County games are something that our campers eagerly look forward to throughout the summer, and on Thursday, July 16 Camp Starlight hosted and won the annual Wayne County Boys Swim Meet.
It was a successful day all round, with strong individual performances being put in by Shai A (1st, 25yd freestyle), Casey B (2nd, 25yd backstroke), Charlie G (2nd, 50yd backstroke), Aaron K (2nd, 50yd backstroke), and Alec G (1st, 50yd backstroke).
Whilst entering the last event of the day – the 200-medley relay – it was neck and neck. However, the team – consisting of Aaron K, Daniel W, Luke B, and Jack V – managed to pull it out of the bag, coming in 2nd place. Due to all their hard work and dedication, the team managed to steal the overall victory for Camp Starlight.
All eyes are now on the girls as next up it is the Girls Swim Meet on July 20. We wish them the best of luck.

Thursday, July 16th, 2015Beginning Junior summer, campers dream of the day when they will finally be Upper Seniors. As young campers, the Uppers seem to have it all. Now those little girls ARE the Upper Seniors, and even some of them can’t believe it. “I thought I’d feel older,” said Upper Senior Alexa W. “It’s strange and amazing to think that I’m now the role model I always looked up to in lower camp.” And that pressure does not escape them. As Upper Seniors, these girls have several new responsibilities. Upper Senior Ava S. reflected on her experience as an Upper during Spirit of Starlight. “It’s very different; We’re in charge. It’s something we did really independently, so the pressure was on.” This responsibility was certainly not a bad thing, however, seeing as the “Aca Seniors” did an unbelievable job at Spirit of Starlight. Their division leader, Nora, is extraordinarily proud of them. “This is a VERY creative bunch. They’re super spirited and up for anything!” These qualities are what make this group of Uppers really stand out. Counselor Gabby, who also got to see these girls as lower seniors last summer, is amazed by this entire division. “It makes me so proud to see how much each of these girls really care for this camp.”

Wednesday, July 8th, 2015Something New at Camp Starlight
Wednesday, July 8th, 2015It sounds strange to say out loud, but this is my 10th summer at Camp Starlight. I first came when I was 7 years old, having only heard about camp through my parents’ incredible stories. I was excited, i imagine, although I honestly don’t remember much. What I do remember, however, is that on the second day of camp I was being shy and hadn’t really spoken to any of the girls yet. It’s a strange situation at any age to just jump right in and live with 8 girls you’ve never met before, but at 7, it was extremely nerve-wracking. We were putting on sunscreen before activity and next to me was a girl named Julia. My mom was, and still is, just a little (a lot) neurotic about sunscreen. With that, she only packed me cream sunscreen for my body, thinking that was the more protective option. But, Julia, on the other hand, had this super cool spray. I looked to her with envy and simply said, “I wish that I had sunscreen like that.” Without hesitation, she handed it to me with a smile and let me use hers. We’ve been best friends ever since. It’s weird how that happens, how things we’re unsure about seem frightening, and new situations make us nervous. On that day, my nerves turned into something beautiful almost immediately. I found myself in a similar situation this summer. After 9 unbelievable summers here as a camper, I was extremely hesitant to become a CA. Different worries and questions came to my mind and they all just sort of fell back to, “but what if it’s different?” And so, here I am, 1 week into this summer, heading to HC duty! It is very different, but in the best way possible. I’m coming closer to being the leader I always admired, and in that there is something really special. Just like on that second day of camp when I felt so nervous, but all at once it felt like home, being a CA has been an amazing and educational experience. Along with all the other lessons this place has taught me, I now know that just because it’s new does not mean it’s bad. Change can be good, and at Starlight it always is.
