Monday, August 3rd, 2015Camp Starlight S-Day!
Monday, August 3rd, 2015As the sun rose up on the amazing Starlight lake this morning it marked the last Starlight S-Day of summer 2015. S-Days are what we call our “special days” when the regular program is put on hold, we get to sleep in, have a yummy breakfast and then all kinds of special things happen.
This S-Day was certainly special. It included the four pillars of what Camp Starlight stands for: fun, friendship, teamwork and creativity. The day was packed full of so many great activities. The campus was full of happy and smiling faces as everyone participated in their activities.
As always, each division had a specific theme for S day. For the Junior Girls, it was a water day. Meanwhile the Junior Boys had a survival day where they caught fish and built shelters. Our Lower Inter Girls had a very exciting day as well when they became Rock stars for the day, making music videos and writing songs in our brand new recording studio. Our Lower Inter Girls became captivating movie directors. The Lower Inter Boys competed in a World Series. Our Upper Inter Boys took part in an adventurous all day canoe trip down the Delaware River. All of our Plebe Boys got very hyped participating in the Starlight Football league. Our Starlight Seniors had a very competitive day participating in the Starlight decathlon.
The day ended with our traditional all-camp cook out and then campers enjoyed the night with their camp siblings. The girls played fun games and the boys participed in a drumming show. S Days are a sacred tradition at Camp Starlight and they are valued by not only the campers but the staff as well, and for good reason – today was a great day.

Monday, August 3rd, 2015Camp Starlight Recipe | Chocolate Lava Muffins
Sunday, August 2nd, 2015Another favorite in the Camp Starlight Cooking Classes this summer were Chocolate Lava Muffins. I am sure our campers are looking forward to making these for their parents when they get home! Yum!
Chocolate Lava Muffins
Ingredients
8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
1 stick butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
Butter, to coat muffin tin
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 cup vanilla ice cream
1 teaspoon espresso powder
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Place a small metal bowl over a saucepan with simmering water. Melt the chocolate and butter in the bowl. Stir in vanilla.
In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, flour and salt. Sift these into the chocolate and mix well with electric hand mixer. Add eggs one at time, fully incorporating each egg before adding the next. Beat at high until batter is creamy and lightens in color, approximately 4 minutes. Chill mixture.
Coat the top and each cup of the muffin tin with butter. Dust with the cocoa powder and shake out excess. Spoon mixture into pan using a 4-ounce scoop or ladle. Bake for 10 to 11 minutes. Outsides should be cake-like and centers should be gooey.
While muffins are in oven, melt the ice cream in a small saucepan. Stir in the espresso powder. Serve over warm muffins.
8th/9th Grade Lacrosse
Sunday, August 2nd, 2015Starlight Vs Camp Wayne
The 8th and 9th grade men of Camp Starlight stepped onto the elite field prepared to battle Camp Wayne. With Dylan G in goal as a motivational leader, their confidence was on a high. The game started with three straight goals from Spencer G. Wayne answered as well as Owen B and Harris G. The first quarter ended with the score of 6-2. The goals kept coming with Rowan K adding two and Owen B adding another. We went into the half time leading 9-4.
While Dylan G was an absolute force with 8 saves, he received huge help from Spence W, Jonny C and Theo O. The four held the powerful Wayne offense. This offense gained some traction in the second half. In the fourth quarter, Camp Wayne tied the game. With goals from Harris G (who ended with 3 goals), Spencer G (5 goals), David G (2 goals) and Rowan K (2 goals) we pulled ahead to win 14-13. We couldn’t be more proud of the great and mighty men of Starlight.
Camp Starlight’s Gymnastics Meet
Saturday, August 1st, 2015The annual Camp Starlight Gymnastics Meet was a great success with Camps Lohikan, Westmont, Indian Head and Tyler Hill all participating in the competition. The day was a great success and gave all the Starlight girls who love gymnastics the opportunity to compete. All of the participants have been training really hard over the last few weeks for this meet and their hard work definitely paid off when Starlight took home 3rd place.
Individual places were won by Juniors Julia H, Ashley T, Charlotte C, Carly E and Ava R. Senior individual places went to Maddie S, Evann S and Sofie F.
The day ran smoothly with all campers enjoying the day. We would like to thank all of the girls who competed for working so hard and also to our Head Coach, Micaela, for organizing such a successful meet.
Boys 10th/11th Grade Lacrosse
Saturday, August 1st, 2015The 10th and 11th grade men of Starlight squared off against Westmont on the beautiful elite field. The game started slowly with Ethan E scoring our only goal of the quarter. Westmont unfortunately answered back with their own goal. Sam S was crucial in goal. He had three big first quarter saves to keep us alive. He would end the day with 9 saves in total. The second half is where we found our strength. Noah G, Griffin S and Max H all scored. This put us up 4-2. The third quarter saw a huge defensive prowess by Jake M, Noah G, Justin S and Jared B. Jared would go ahead to score off an interception as well. While adding three big assists throughout the game, Josh B put in a dagger of a shot as well. Oscar O also scored making the score 7-3. The fourth quarter was rough. Westmont fought back from the defense to score one goal. Noah G scored a big goal and Ethan E put the final nail in the coffin. The final score was an amazing 9-6. It was a truly amazing win for these boys.
Toni in Cali: A Travel Journal
Friday, July 31st, 2015Golden Gate Bridge
Dear Diary,
First full day in San Francisco began with a bang! Let me tell you something though, eating a full breakfast was NOT the best idea seeing as we walked across the entire Golden Gate Bridge. I may have cramped up a little, but it was all worth it to see the amazing view from up top. It’s strange to think that humans like me built a bridge so big! Can’t wait for tomorrow!
Lombard Street
Dear Diary,
Think of the intro to Full House where Dani rides on his bike down the most crooked street in the world. Now think that I climbed that very same street! The hike was a struggle, but the view made it all worth it. There were beautiful flowers and lovely houses lining the sides of the road, and climbing with all my Starlight friends ensured some great memories to be made.
Behind Bars
Dear Diary,
Under any other circumstances, I think my mom would be pretty disappointed in me for ending up here. But it’s a rare exception seeing as I’m in jail at Alcatraz! Through a tour of this incredible museum, I got to really understand what it was like here in prison. They really went to the bathroom in there?!? Culture shock! At least the view was beautiful…Overall, it was another great experience in Cali.
White Water Rafting
Dear Diary,
Helmets on for this outdoor adventure! Those rapids were not a joke! With my Starlight friends, we conquered the class 3 rapids together. The scenery made the adventure that much more enjoyable. It’s hard not to smile when you’re surrounded by all of those amazing mountains. Here’s us posing for the Go-Pro about to take on another wave.
Improv
Dear Diary,
We couldn’t stop laughing as we arrived at the Improv comedy club on Melrose Avenue. You wouldn’t believe what I did! I volunteered to “whip and nae nae” for the audience in a competition! (I won btw.) We started off LA with a bang!
Universal Studios
Dear Diary,
Hey! How’d I get in that shot? Well, I guess anything is possible in Hollywood, the land of movies and magic! A tour of Universal Studios was a major highlight of my trip. We got the backstage track about how movies are really made. But that wasn’t all! Some epic roller coasters sure put me for a loop (no pun intended).
Disney
Dear Diary,
I was off to DisneyLand, where dreams and wishes really do come true! I grabbed mickey mouse ears and went on my way into the magical kingdom. Hopped on the ferris wheel with my friends and got the best view of the park. And I even ended the day with a beautiful water and light show. I’ll never be too old to enjoy the happiest place on earth.
Hollywood Star
Dear Diary,
It’s me with the man…the myth…the legend…Michael Jackson! It was quite the “thriller” to pose with his star. Walking on the street with so many celebrities was unlike any other experience. Each and every one of those people have done great things for our culture, bringing us some of America’s largest talents. I’ve been a star on the stage of the Starlight Playhouse, but do you think I have what it takes to make it it Hollywood?
Friends
Dear Diary,
Although traveling to California was an unbelievable experience, it wouldn’t have been the same without the people who I traveled with. I got to know so many people in the CA division better, and learned a lot about my division leaders. The bonds I’ve formed on this trip will never be forgotten, and neither will the memories I made. Diary, I’ll see you on my next epic adventure around the world, but for now, see ya!

SMU took the game, winning a great game for their team. Tulane Vs USF also had an awesome game of basketball, Tulane excitingly took the game winning shot. Giselle S is also always positive when cheering her team on. The Lower Inters are having a great time competing in leagues this year and we are so proud of our girls.
