I Found My Passion at Camp Starlight

You might’ve read the title and thought this blog would be a little corny, well you’re in for a treat. I was a camper who enjoyed watching sports rather than playing them. I was thrilled by box scores and highlight reels. That’s not to say I didn’t participate, I was just your classic outfield baseball player. As I reached the upper divisions of camp, my interests in sports reached its peak. I got more involved in sports during the year, which translated to some on-field successes down on Alumni Field and in the Field House. I called David on the phone to express interest in returning to camp to participate in the Apprentice Program. He mentioned to me I would need to focus on a specific activity. Unfortunately, my athletic abilities would not translate into my camper after-life. David recommended I hone my craft in the lower Rec Hall home to video, radio, and sports broadcasting. These programs interested me, but let’s just say I wasn’t buzzing to head across camp every day to go to work. As the summer progressed, my interest in Radio was at an all time high. The summer ended and I returned home and joined my high school’s online newspaper.
As I sat in school, I wondered when I would be able to return to the 18461 to learn more about an area of work that really interested me. I returned in the summer of 2015 to head the radio program. I was tasked with creating daily programs, activities, and projects for campers of all ages. As the summer came to close, I had to get ready for the biggest challenge of my life, moving into my dorm at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Luckily, I quickly befriended a group of friends who actively reported for WSUM, Wisconsin’s student radio station. By good fortune, I was given a timeslot to host a sports talk show once a week on friday afternoons. As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, it is really corny to say that I found my passion at camp. The reality is that Camp Starlight gave me the social skills and opportunity to fuel a passion I had no idea I had.

Humans of Camp Starlight

“Starlight is a place where it’s cool to be a grownup kid. My campers love it when I’m just as goofy- if not goofier than they are. It’s what camp is all about, just being yourself and having a blast.”

Basketball vs. B’nai Brith
Starlight’s 10th and 11th grade girls defeated Camp B’nai Brith Perlman on Wednesday. All the girls played really well and aimed to help each other score and work on their weaknesses. Marni K. and Jessica W. stepped into the spotlight today with incredible defense, which included a multitude of steals. Alexa I. and Allyson J. grabbed a plethora of offensive rebounds which lead to multiple second chance opportunities. Overall, the girls played hard and enjoyed the game today. Final Score 46-8.
