Woodworking with Lower Camp Girls

Sunday, July 13th, 2014

Windmills are one of the fun and imaginative projects Camp Starlight campers are making in Woodworking this year and, with some help from Woodworking Specialist Oli G,  Lower Camp girls made their designs come to life. Hearts and flowers were cut from a single block of wood after first being sketched on, then hammered into a square base before being painted. The girls were very proud of their finished projects. One camper even dedicated her windmill to her dad. Other woodworking projects on which campers are working this summer include friendship necklaces and initial bookends.

Time for a Card Trick

One of the most popular programs at Camp Starlight is Magic. Click the link below to watch a video of Jason S., Camp Starlight’s own Magic instructor, demonstrating a card trick the campers are learning this summer.

Starlight Baseball

It’s been quite exciting for all of us this year at Camp Starlight! Baseball students have played hard while picking up some crucial pointers to improve their game at all levels. Our main objective is to keep it fun, do the best we can and teach the students key skills to help in their development as athletes. Our first week has been focused on skilled development and practice games. In our first games, 2 of our 3 teams have been victorious over Camp Poyntelle with outstanding performance from our players. Thank you for your great efforts, Starlight campers!

Starlight vs. Camp Tioga Tennis, July 9

Starlight’s 6th grade boys won their first Wayne County away match. Milo K. had a test at first singles in winning 8-6 and Blake S. came back to win 8-6 as well. Aidan C. won 8-0. Both Starlight doubles teams of Spencer B. and Jacob P. and Justin H. and Alex E. won 8-0 and 8-1 respectively. Congrats on their first win and moving forward with confidence!

Starlight vs. Bryn-Mawr Tennis, July 10

The Starlight 10th and 11th grade girls were shorthanded without their CA teammates, but fought hard in defeat to a very strong Bryn-Mawr squad. Andie S. won a tight match at #1 singles and Meredith N. played a fine match in defeat and played some great points in losing 8-1. Zoe T. was outmatched and fell 8-0 while the doubles pairs of Lauren R. and Brooke L. along with Emma K and Lauren P. played hard in an 8-2 defeat. Great sportsmanship was on display.

Final Score 4-1, L

Upper Seniors vs. Key Staff Apache Relay

Saturday, July 12th, 2014

The Camp Starlight campus is pretty quiet at 7:00 am on most mornings. There are a few people out jogging or getting in their morning workout before reveille. But most everyone is still in bed…except for one morning. For the past 16 years, the Upper Senior Campers and the Key Staff have met at the flagpole at 7:00 am to face off in the Upper Seniors vs. Key Staff Apache Relay. The Apache Relay is a baton passing race—with a twist. It’s also a tense but friendly battle between those two groups. Passing of the baton is done upon the completion of a task rather than running of a distance. If your idea of pre-breakfast fun is doing crazy things such as washing someone else’s hair or painting their toenails, then you’re probably really jealous right now…or you should be. The entire camp participates in the Apache Relay during the Camp Starlight Olympics, but the Upper Seniors vs. Key Staff Apache is a sacred showdown held earlier in the summer.

At this year’s Seniors vs. Key Staff Apache Relay, the Key Staff had everything to prove. They’d emerged victorious 15 of the past 15 years. That’s right. They were confident going in that they would finish the Apache 16-0, but the Upper Seniors arrived determined that this was their year. The teams traded the lead throughout the race—a few slip ups and kerfuffles on both sides took it down to the very last task where it appeared to FINALLY be the Upper Seniors’ year to claim the win. The Key Staff, never down for long, however, managed to pull out the 16th victory in the end to make their record 16-0. Regardless of the outcome, both the Upper Seniors and the Key Staff are to be congratulated for their incredible efforts and sportsmanship.

The weather at camp today is picture perfect. Great for paddle boarding-one of the many activities on the Camp Starlight waterfront.

Making a Healthy Snack with the Lower Senior Girls

Friday, July 11th, 2014

Today our lower senior girls were making healthy and delicious yogurt parfaits, with the help of cooking specialist Emma L. from Washington. Camper Nikki W. said her favorite part of cooking is eating the finished product while Dani S. enjoys getting to prepare the ingredients.

Fresh Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits:

1. Cut the fresh  strawberries and banana into small pieces.

2. Layer the yogurt, strawberry, banana, and granola

3. Repeat the layer once more.

4. Top the parfait with whip cream.

Counselor of the Day

Friday, July 11th, 2014

Name:  Georgia Wayman

Hometown: Christchurch, New Zealand

Position: Golf Specialist and Guitar Specialist

Winning Counselor of the Day means… it’s reassurance that I am doing a good job. It’s good to know the girls are appreciating me as a counselor and it makes me even happier to be here.

The best thing about camp is… spending time with the energetic upper senior girls. They all get along like sisters and make me feel like one of the girls.

On being the golf specialist and guitar specialist… I enjoy both for different reasons. I really enjoy music and it’s so much fun to come up with songs together. I’ve been playing golf for 10 years and I can pass on my experience to the kids.

A memorable moment from camp…There was one girl having trouble hitting the ball and I have her some pointers. She hit the ball really well and her face lit up!

Before coming to camp I never thought I would…dance around with napkins in my hand.

Take Me out to the Ballgame

Friday, July 11th, 2014

Two of America’s favorite past times—sleepaway camp and baseball—come together each summer for Camp Starlight campers.  Whether their baseball adventure takes them to enjoy the Binghamton Mets and the Scranton RailRiders, campers always enjoy spending time with friends, watching the game, and even snacking on stadium food. In fact, what could be better than a hearty 7th inning stretch round of Take Me out to the Ballgame with camp friends and everyone crossing their fingers for that win so that the night closes out with a fireworks show.  In addition to baseball trips, campers also take out of camp trips to the movies, bowling, and skating as well as go on overnight camping and end of the year divisional trips.
