Recipe of the Day – 07.07.11

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Hannah G from Girls Bunk 15 wrote about cooking in her blogging class today.  It’s the perfect introduction for today’s recipe.

What do I smell cooking in The Cottage?  I think I smell chocolate chip cookies! Yay!  I have cooking next period.  Cooking is everyone’s favorite activity!  Who knows what we’ll make?  I’m in the mood for ginger snaps.  Or maybe chocolate chip cookies.  Everything that we make is so delicious!  Where do they come up with these recipes?  I can’t wait until my cottage sleepover so I can make brownies.  Whenever a bunk has cooking they fill with joy.

Blueberry Oat Muffins (makes 36)

1 and 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

¾ cup rolled oats

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

1 beaten egg

¾ cup milk

½ cup packed brown sugar

¼ cup cooking oil

½ teaspoon vanilla

½ cup blueberries

Grease muffin pan.  Stir together the flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda and salt and make a well in the middle of the dry mixture.

In a separate bowl combine the egg, milk, brown sugar, oil and vanilla and then add to the dry mixture.  Stir all the ingredients until just moistened and then fold in the fruit.

Put the mixture into a muffin tin, making sure each section is only half full as they will rise, and then bake at 400 degrees for 16-18 minutes.

Boys 6th Grade Hockey (H)

Starlight 12 – Wayne 0

What a great game to kick off the season! Michael H, Sam S and Jacob K led the offensive attack with 5 points each. Ethan E and Matthew F also scored while Jake M had a shut out at net. This is a team that can’t be stopped! The final score was 12-0 in favor of Starlight!  Way to go boys!

Boys 8th Grade Basketball (H)

Starlight 46 – Wayne 42

This was a close game which saw Starlight trailing for the first three quarters of the game but holding a 35-34 lead on entering the fourth quarter.  The team then switched into a full-court press which seemed to be the game changing decision.  With 6.7 seconds left into the game Seneca Lake took its’ final attempt and Austin K sealed the game with the final rebound and free-throws.  This was a well fought game with some impressive scores spread throughout all the team members.

Girls 7th Grade Basketball (H)

Burch, A. Shapiro, M. Breslow and L. Friedman with eight a piece.  Other all-round contributors included E. Lisser, L. Reiss, B. Labonski, J.Epstein, J. Kahan, J. Rubin and L. Arts & Crafts at Camp Starlight

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

We are rightly very proud of our Arts & Crafts program at Camp Starlight.  Housed in our magnificent Carriage House, we have rooms dedicated to ceramics and woodworking as well as a fabulous deck for sunny days and artistic inspiration.  We have an amazing, talented, creative and enthusiastic staff of eleven working here, all ready to help our campers find a way to express themselves.

The department is headed by Leslie who is spending her fourth summer as a staff member here.  Leslie came to Camp Starlight as a camper in the early 1980s and is continuing the family tradition by sending her own children here.  Leslie majored in Art at college and is a qualified teacher.  During the winter months she spends her time planning for the summer at camp and each year brings with her over 200 projects for our campers to enjoy.  Leslie loved her time as a camper at Camp Starlight and she loves being here as an adult even more as she gets to be a part of making that Starlight magic.

In ceramics you could be making piggy banks or coil pots or you might be throwing vases and mugs on the potter’s wheel.  Our on-site kiln means your work can be fired and glazed, all ready for you to take back home with you.  In woodworking there are a lot of great projects making wooden games like pinball machines, tooth fairy boxes and signs for your room.  Favorites in our general arts and crafts program are candle-making, sock monkeys, mosaics, dog tags, plaster masks and beading / jewelry making – we get through tens of thousands of beads each summer!  We also offer a fine arts program where you can try out oil and watercolor painting as well as working with pastels.  There really is something for everyone here at Camp Starlight and the best thing is you can take it all home with you as a lasting reminder of your summer.

What’s cooking?

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Cooking is one of the most popular activities at camp and it’s not surprising when the things that our campers are creating taste so good.  Matt and Cristy run the programs for the boys and girls respectively and are really happy that the campers are showing as much interest in the making as they are the eating!

One of the most popular recipes this week has been Spiced Banana Loaf.  Here’s the recipe if you want to try it out at home:

Spiced Banana Loaf

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup sugar

2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon ginger

1 cup ripe bananas

2 eggs

1/3 cup shortening

Grease two loaf pans (7.5×3.5×2 inch) and set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl stir together half of the flour (one cup), the sugar, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, ginger and a pinch of salt.  Add the banana, eggs and shortening.  Beat with an electric mixer on low to medium speed for about 30 seconds or until combined.  Then beat on high speed for 2 minutes, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally.  Add the remaining flour and beat until well mixed.

Pour batter into the prepared pans.  Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until done.  Cool in the pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes.  Remove the bread and cool on a rack.

If you wish, this banana bread can be enhanced further with an icing glaze of your choice.

Starlight 3 – Poyntelle 1

The girls started the 2011 season as reigning champs and faced a team that they had beaten 7-0 the previous year.  A much improved Poynetelle visited Alumni Field and even though Starlight controlled much of the game, it was certainly harder work than in 2010.  Reiss up top made some fine runs, supported ably by Lisser who ensured that the Poynetelle defenders did not have too much time on the ball.  Breslow and Shapiro kept control of the center of the field with Burstein and Labonski making some fine runs down the flanks.  At the back Cohen, Guttman and Mach ensured that most of the Poynetelle attacks fizzled out before they could amount to much, and from this base Starlight took a well-earned two goal lead at the half.  The second half followed a similar pattern to the first although towards the end of the game Poynetelle snuck a goal and looked to make a game of it until Starlight hit a third on the break from Reiss.  A good opener and now Starlight await either Island Lake, Lohikan or Westmont in the next round.

Boys 10/11th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight 1 – Wayne 5

The 10th grade boys faced a stern challenge in their opening game having to play a Wayne team composed solely of 11th graders.  An early Wayne goal effectively set the tone for the rest of the game but to their credit, the 10th graders continually hustled making their older opposition work for their goals.  Two Wayne goals late in the first half did not deter Starlight from starting the second half in a positive fashion, and when Wolff was brought down in the area Greenbaum stepped up to reduce the deficit to two.  Starlight pressured well in the second half and Chirls hit the post and Greenbaum had two free kicks scrambled away by the Wayne keeper.  Two further goals brought the final score to 5-1 although Starlight never let up and continued to push forward until the final whistle.  Despite the scoreline Starlight put forth a good effort and Chernov, Cohen and Kahn at the back made life hard for the Wayne forwards, while midfielders Breslow and Wolff pressured their opposite numbers throughout the game.  For some this may be the last game played in Starlight colors, but this team has won the championship game three times in six attempts, finishing second on another occasion.  And that’s not too shabby.  Well done boys.

Girls 5th Grade Soccer (H)

Starlight vs. Tioga

The girls made very light work of Tioga starting the game at a frenetic pace and pinning their opposition in their own half for most of the game.  On the odd occasion when Tioga were able to break on Starlight’s goal, Spar, Tillinger and Lev gave short shrift to the opposing forwards.  In midfield Greenwald and Jaffe continually broke on Tioga’s goal although the early goals were scored by Chernett playing as a forward.  A brief cameo in the forward position by Scherr netted three quick goals and by this point the game was ended as a contest.  Next up are Lavi, a team Starlight beat 8-2 in 2010, although the girls are already working hard to ensure that they get past Lavi so they can get another crack at a Chenawanda team that knocked them out of last year’s competition 1-0.

Girls 7th Grade Lacrosse (H)

Starlight 17 – Chenawanda 9

The 7th grade girls played a great game and came away with a big victory against Chenawanda.  Olivia R scored 7 goals while Andie S and Lindsay F added 4 and 3 goals respectively.  Brooke H made her debut in the goal and registered 10 saves.  A superb team effort from all the girls.

Invitational Girls 8/9th Grade Volleyball

Today we came in third place at the Camp Wayne Invitational Tournament.  In our first match of the morning Sara S served 17 in a row to lead us to victory against Camp Morasha.  Other key players were Hanna R and Dana G playing great defense.  As we advanced in pool play we beat Camp Lohikan to make it into the final rounds of play.  Jenna K and Melissa S served well in that match.  In our third round of play we were defeated by Camp Westmont but bounced back to play a thrilling match against Tioga that had everyone on the edge of their seats.  We played as a true team and had a great day!

Boys 5th Grade Soccer (A)

Starlight 13 – Lohikan 1

Runners-up in 2010, the boys went to work earlier today against local rivals Lohikan and wasted no time in showing why they are fast becoming one of Starlight’s top prospects for future soccer success.  Kansler and Honig did fine work at the back with Honig making some fine forward runs and coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions.  In midfield Meinhoff, Kessler and Baim made light work of Lohikan’s midfield line continually playing balls into wide positions as well as driving towards the top of the 18 yard area and firing shots in from distance.  Up top Gallant and Strober mesmerized their markers and the game was one way traffic aside from a couple of forays by Lohikan’s boy from Brazil who scored their only goal of the game.  The final score line was 13-1 in Starlight’s favor, and the boys now await the winner of the Wayne/Chenawanda game.

Today I found a dinosaur…..

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Amanda K wrote this fantastic short story in her creative writing class about finding a dinosaur.  We thought it was so great that you would like to read it too.

Today I found a dinosaur in my backyard.  I screamed so loud it broke a glass in the kitchen!  I asked the dinosaur what his name was.  He said it was Wolly.  He was green and spotted.  I asked him where he came from.  “I come from Spotted Dino-land,” said Wolly.  He said to me, “May I please have some plants to eat?” I said, “Sure!”  I gave him some tomato plants.  My mom saw me and she said, “Amanda, don’t pick those!”

I asked Wolly if I could get on his back.  He said, “Sure”, so I did.  We rode around in circles all around my backyard.  We rode for two hours.  Then my mom called for dinner – it was salad.  Wolly said, “Can I come?”  I said, “Come on in” and then we ate salad together.

Senior Spotlight #2

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Today Alexa M, Allix C and Hannah G share with us their feelings about entering their last summer as a camper at Camp Starlight.  Thank you ladies!

Being an Upper Senior is a big spot to step into as the oldest campers at Camp Starlight. One of the most important roles Upper Seniors must take on is to be role models. It is important to remember that the younger campers look up to the older ones, so being spirited, optimistic, and responsible will help to make these seven weeks even better than the year before. This summer, to probably each and every Upper Senior camper, will be most memorable. Some activities that are exciting to us include Camp Rules, Olympics, our big trip to Cleveland, Ohio, sleeping in the Lakehouse/Lodge, and many more. The summer is bittersweet because as we enjoy all of the great activities camp has to offer, we also must say goodbye to some friends that may not come back to camp in years to follow. In the Upper Senior girls’ “song” that they sang at the opening campfire, the lyrics say, “We have had the time of our lives, and I will not forget the faces left behind.” Camp Starlight creates memories and friendships that will last a lifetime, and every summer gets better and better as we have the “times of our lives”. Each camper is loving camp so far, and is anticipating the rest of the summer that has yet to come.

The Camp Starlight 9th Grade boys basketball team held off a furious comeback by Wayne in a first round Wayne County Tournament game.  Hunter A led the Starlight squad with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Kyle G led the offense effectively with 7 assists.  Starlight quickly jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in the 2nd quarter and eventually extended it to 31-20 early in the 4th quarter using a high-powered fast break attack and ferocious offense putbacks.  The Wayne squad cut the lead to two points with just a few minutes to go but Lance G and Daniel P sealed the game with clutch free throws at the end.
