Camp Starlight played a great game overall – it was extremely competitive.  Starlight entered the 4th quarter down 15 points, but made an impressive comeback and cut the lead down to just 3 points at one stage but were unable to get closer.  Sammie K scored 4 points, 5 rebounds and played great defense.  Max M has six points and 4 assists and was a superb leader.  Michael S scored 2 points, 9 blocks and 11 rebounds, Jared B had 8 points and 4 rebounds, Jared F had 3 offense rebounds and 4 points, and Harrison S had 3 steals, scored 7 points and 5 rebounds.  Impressive results boys!

Girls 4th Grade Softball (A)

The girls played at the invitational tournament held at Trails End today.  They played two great games:

Starlight 0 – Trails End 2

Starlight had their first game in the tournament against Trails End.  Chelsea S started the game with a single, and to push her over was Carly K.  Vanessa M got two singles but the final score ended 2-0 to Trails End.

Starlight 3 – Towanda 8

In the second game Andie W scored the first run of the game starting with a single moved over by Reese C (playing first base).  Reese was also the second one to score followed by Olivia M and Morgan C.  The girls played a great game but the final score ended 8-3 to Towanda.

The girls should really be congratulated on their performance in their first ever softball invitational as they showed real Starlight spirit.

We thought it might be fun to take a few photos around camp and for you to guess what or where they are.  All of them form part of camp life and should hopefully bring back a few memories.  Answers will be posted tomorrow!

Where at camp can you find this piece of artwork made from bandanas?

What would you be doing if you saw this?

Where can you find this fabulous bench?

Today’s photo of the day comes from our Senior Boys who were given a photo scavenger hunt to complete.  One of the items to find was a girl with two braids in her hair and here she is.  Well done boys!

Boys 4th Grade Hockey (H)

Starlight 11 – Tyler Hill 0

In their first game together, the 4th grade boys put on an incredible display of teamwork and let it be known that the future of Starlight hockey is here.  Jonah S exploded for five goals, his first one coming only seconds into the game.  Eric M won nearly every faceoff and spread the puck around recording one goal and three assists.  Ben C and Jesse S had two goals each and Jason F completed the scoring with a goal.  Aiden N, Jonny C, Kyle F and Ryan W anchored the impeccable defense.  Abe W stopped multiple scoring opportunities and recorded the shutout in his first ever competitive game in goal.

Boys 7th Grade Baseball (A)

Starlight 6 – Westmont 12

Jake S and max M led the Starlight offensive, going 3 for 4 and 2 for 3 respectively.  Harrison S had a 3 RBI triple in the 4th inning and Dylan K added a 2 RBI double in the 6th.  The team played extremely well but after a few early defensive setbacks, were unable to forge a comeback.

Stack the Caps

Friday, July 8th, 2011

The Starlight family is a very strong one, with bonds lasting over multiple generations or even between future best friends who just met. We keep in touch while away from each other during the year and always support our camp family. So appropriately, the theme for the first week of camp was “community.” Jason preached this ideal during our weekly service, saying how we should stick together, through thick and thin. This idea is evidenced through our camp’s two charities, “Stack the Caps” and “Paint the Caps.”

These organizations stem from the memories of a former camper, who a few years ago passed away after a battle with a rare form of cancer. Their collective purpose is to provide new or decorated hats to children who have lost their hair because of chemotherapy. This mission statement is sincere, and has consequently brightened the lives of many. “Stack” and “Paint” have gone from camp activities to nationwide events, with people from all around the country participating. We’ve had individuals like Ally S, Julia G, Lauren M, Corey W, and Kyle M collecting hats for their B’nei Mitzvah projects. Griffin M, Liv S, Alyssa M. Alison E, and Hayley M stacked hats at their school and Adam F organized hat decorating events at his temple.

At our own camp event last Friday, with the help of all the campers, ranging from lower juniors to upper seniors, we stacked over eight feet of hats. The involvement by so many shows the true, heartfelt feelings of the Starlight family. The ties are so strong and throughout the year campers count down the days until they return to their second home. Our two organizations try to keep this connection alive by not only setting forth the meaningful donation of hats, but by also kindling the fire of our memories. For more information on the charities or to learn how to get involved, please visit the websites below:

Kyle’s Blog

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Kyle F from Boys Bunk 5 approached me this morning with his blog.  I thought it said so many great things that you would love to read it too.  Thank you for sharing Kyle!

Camp Starlight means FUN to me.

My favorite thing about camp is Super Sixth.

When I climbed the rock wall here it made me feel really proud of myself.

We have special events at camp like the Thumb Wrestling Federation (for juniors only), Starlight Wrestling Federation, July 4th fireworks, water carnival and Olympics.

Kyle also wrote lots about his daily routine and also how he gets to waterski here.  I think somebody is having an amazing summer!

Recipe of the day – 07.08.11

Friday, July 8th, 2011

The Cottage has today been smelling of that all-time favourite – brownies!!  Here’s the recipe if you want to share the taste:

Brownies (makes 16)

½ cup butter

½ cup sugar

½ cup firmly packed brown sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa

2 eggs

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup small marshmallows

Heat the oven to 350 degrees and grease or foil line an 8 inch square baking pan.

In a mixing bowl beat the butter, sugars and cocoa until well blended.  Beat in the eggs, one at a time.

In a small bowl, mix the flour and baking powder together.  Stir into the cocoa mixture.  Stir in the vanilla and marshmallows.

Pour the mixture into the greased pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a cake tester / toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool completely.  Cut into 2-inch squares and serve.

Boys 9th Grade Tennis (H)

Starlight 4 – Chenawanda 0

A great result for our 9th grade boys tennis team.  The team jumped out to early leads in all games and stayed focused for the entire match.  Even though some of the matches were close, the boys hung in there and performed extremely well.  Special mentions go to the doubles team of Ian G and Harris W and the singles players Kyle G and Zach F.

5th July 2011

Boys 7th Grade and Under Lacrosse (A)

Starlight 19 – Lohikan 4

The 7th grade and under boys lacrosse team won against Lohikan in convincing fashion.  Michael H (4 goals), Ethan E (3 goals), Jared B (3 goals), Noah G (3 goals) and Josh W (3 goals) led the scoring.  Garrett S and Jared F played excellent defense and dominated ground balls and transition.  A well deserved win.

6th July 2011

Girls 8th Grade Basketball (A)

Starlight 10 – Lavi 30

The final score in this game really does not reflect the gutsy determination and team effort displayed by the girls throughout.  Starlight played very hard throughout the game, chasing loose balls and diving on the floor to try and gain control of the game.  Special mentions need to go to Samantha B with 4 points and 9 rebounds, Georgie E with 4 points and Lauren Z 2 points.  A great team effort ladies!

7th July 2011

Boys 5th Grade Basketball (A)

Starlight 27 – Nesher 28

Camp Starlight entered the 4th quarter down 9 points but with great defense and scoring by Ryan K, the team cut the deficit to just 1 point at final score.  The team played with great effort and intensity the entire game and worked so hard to pull the score back, they should all be commended on their performance.  Players to note are Ryan K with 15 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds, Max K had 2 points and 2 rebounds and Dylan T had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Girls 8/9th Grade Lacrosse (A)

Starlight 13 – Wayne 11

The girls stayed impressively calm throughout the match and worked together to keep the lead and win.  Brandi R scored 4 goals, Megan B scored 3, Caroline W scored 2 with Devin B, Dana G, Hanna R and Carli G all scoring one goal each.  Sydney T made 3 saves in goal.  Smart plays by all the girls.

Alumni blog #1

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

If you’ve ever spent the summer at Camp Starlight then the chances are that when the end of June comes around each year, your mind starts to wander back to those days spent in the gorgeous Pocono Mountains.  Once you’ve been part of camp then it has a special place in your heart which never leaves you.

Just because our alumni can’t be here with us in person each year, doesn’t mean that they can’t continue to be a part of Camp Starlight.  Just look at the plaques on the rafters of the dining hall and every one of you has a place forever here.   You form part of the traditions and spirit of Camp Starlight which the campers here today enjoy, not forgetting you’re part of the ever growing Starlight family.

We will be running a special blog throughout the summer which will hopefully bring those memories flooding back to you and make you feel like you’re almost here too.

The photo illustrating this blog was requested by Shelley Shapiro Nolan who joined as a camper aged just seven in 1947 and rose through the ranks to become a counselor, spending her last summer here in 1959.  Hope you like it Shelley!

Today’s picture comes from the Senior Girls who were tasked with taking a “mystery” picture.  The other members of the group then had to guess what it was.  What do you think it is?  The answer is below.

It’s a close up of a broom!
