Spencer G from bunk six drew this amazing picture of the waterfront and we thought that it is so good we should share it with everyone. Look at the detail on the boys and girls docks, not to mention the fishing area and boat dock. Simply beautiful!

Friday, July 29th, 2011Community service program at Camp Starlight
Friday, July 29th, 2011This summer the upper camp girls participated in a new option period, community service. The girls who had chosen community service were able to work with Allison Miller in creating a way to give back. Following visiting day, the campers are allowed to have their candy for 48 hours. Allison and the girls came up with an idea called Operation Canteen to collect the candy after the deadline. After distributing fifty four Starlight tin boxes to the boy and girl HC’s the campers were told to gather their left over visiting day candy and place it in the boxes. Once the committee collected all the boxes, Allison will send them to the troops fighting for us in the Middle East. We are all very excited to know that we are going to give back to the people who really deserve it!

The community service program is now working on an art project for fundraising for the residents of Joplin.
Creative writing – a new camp song?
Friday, July 29th, 2011In creative writing option today, the girls were asked to write new words to a song. Alyssa M and Arie C from Bunk 11 wrote the following, to be sung to the tune of, “Wave your Flag.”
Ooooooo give me stuffed shells
Give me wacky mac
Give me canteen, everyday
Now see the counselors
Up and cheering now
As we get up on
Waterskiiiiiiiiiiiis
In the bunks our
Friendships get higher
On inspection
Fun at camp
Everyday
We never want to
Leeeeaaaavvve
Hearts are pounding
As we pull into
Celebration is around us
Every bunk all around us
Me forever, at Camp Starlight
We all say
When I get older
I’ll be a CA then
Become a counselor!
Miss Starlight
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011Hannah W is very excited about tonight’s evening activity – Miss Starlight. Here is what she wrote about it in blogging today:
Tonight is Miss Starlight night. Each girls’ bunk can choose any boy counselor in the camp to dress them up like a girl. You can dress them up however you like so like a fairy or princess. There is a winner for whoever is best dressed and who does the best talent. Our counselor is Tom from boating. We think we are going to dress him up like a ballerina. We are going to put makeup on him. His name is going to be Tombellina. He is going to wear a tutu and he is is going to be very pretty.
Thanks Hannah – let’s see if he wins!

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011Gymnastics at Camp Starlight
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011Nobody can deny the great facilities available at Camp Starlight, but one of our most outstanding areas has to be gymnastics, situated in the stunning Carriage House. Built in 2009, the facility has a sprung floor, vaulting area, asymmetric bars, three beams and a tumble track. Fully enclosed but with full height sliding doors for hot days, gymnastics is an all-weather activity here.
Gymnastics at Starlight is going from strength to strength. We have participated in three gymnastics invitationals this year, including the Tropical Twist meet held right here. Both our senior and junior teams won second place team overall at the Wayne County meets, and we came first at our in-house competition. Full reports for each meet can be found in the JayZ sports blogs.
These outstanding results are down to, of course, the talent of the girls we have here, but also because we can offer them the opportunity to compete in our recreational meet, regardless of their age or ability. This helps to build confidence in a non-pressurized environment, and also serves as a showcase for our girls to demonstrate the fabulous routines they have been working on. When the girls are ready for the competitive meets they are already well versed in what to expect and perform extremely well.
Our gymnastics department is headed by John L. John was a member of the Brazilian national gymnastics team from 1978 to 1985 and was an alternate for his country in the 1980 Olympic games. When he’s not at camp, John runs pre-school gymnastics classes in Southern Florida. John believes we have some seriously talented young ladies here at Starlight and thinks that we just get better every year. Bring on 2012!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011Recipe of the day 07.26.11
Tuesday, July 26th, 2011This recipe has been a real hit with the campers and we can use some of the delicious fresh herbs from our garden to make the sauce. Yum!
Pizza
For the dough:
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 ¾ teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
For the sauce:
4 cups tomato sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
¼ onion, chopped
¼ cup grated parmesan
¼ cup olive oil
½ chopped red bell pepper
Fresh basil, chopped
Fresh oregano, chopped
To make the dough, simply mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until you have the correct consistency. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky. Then roll it out on a floured surface.
For the sauce, brown the onion, bell pepper and garlic in a saucepan with the olive oil and then cook for 15-20 minutes on a low heat. Then add the tomato sauce and let it simmer for 15-20 more minutes. Add the parmesan, salt, fresh ground pepper and herbs and let it simmer for another 15 minutes. After this time all the flavors will have infused and you will be left with a thick, rich sauce.
Spread as much of the sauce as is to your liking onto the rolled pizza dough. Top with cheese and your favorite toppings and then bake at 400 degrees until the edges are just brown.
